Redwoods vs Sequoias: Tallest vs Biggest

The Coast Redwood grows taller than any tree, and Hyperion stands 115.9 meters in a hidden California grove. Thick bark up to 30 cm resists fire, and fog supplies 30 to 40 percent of the water, absorbed directly through the needles. The Giant Sequoia takes the volume crown instead: General Sherman packs 1,487 cubic meters of trunk at roughly 2,200 years old, protected by bark 90 cm thick.

Sequoia cones can wait 20 years for fire to open them, and logging erased 95 percent of old redwoods by the 1970s..
